I have been so very lucky to work with Mrs. Cathcart's grade 4's at Hewitt's Creek PS. Such an amazing group of kids, so eager to learn, explore and grow.
For today's lesson we are doing poetry and in that poetry lesson we are talking about how poet's use small moments to pull big feelings for writing. I chose to write about the moment my students "get" what I am teaching.
People ask me all the time why I choose to pursue teaching knowing the job prospects are scary right now. Teaching is a part of me. It is my heart and soul. It isn't a choice, it is something I have to do.
Anyway, I am no poet, but here is what I wrote.
Love of Teaching
The hand goes up,
The light turns on.
The moment of truth
And the reason I'm here.
Was I successful?
Do they understand?
Will their day end with
"YES I CAN!"
The words come pouring,
Out of his mouth.
There's no stopping the learning,
I have no doubt.
Something has clicked,
I've done something right.
But most importantly,
They continued to try.
Together we're learning,
There's no perfect way.
But each day we're trying-
Growing from mistakes.
We're teaching each other
We're sharing our skills,
The classroom is our home,
and together, we WILL.
